How did you know your computer has virus? Did your antivirus found it or could not clean it? or, you are observing some mysterious things happening? Are you sure it is virus , not spyware?

Anyway, get AVG antivirus and spybot search%26destroy as antispyware. The reason I am recommending these because both can run in safe mode and from boot cd(something like BartPE).

Many others have already given you many list but no one said the key thing. How to clean?

Install those software and do update.

Method-1: First disconnect your internet connection(physically unplug wires). Then run spyware scanner first. Then antivirus. Then restart pc. Now I recommend run disk clean up: either use windows disk cleanup tool or get ccleaner(www.ccleaner.com). Clean all junk. Reconnect internet.

Method-2(better option): Unplug internet. start computer in safemode. Run antivirus first and then antispyware. restart computer in normal mode.

Method-3(best option when all above can't clean infection): Unplug internet. Make some boot security disk like bartPE. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ .

Now, boot from that cd and run antivirus and antispyware. it will clean to the root.

Hope you understand the importance of these steps.

Just as recommendation: After you clean infection, install a good firewall like zonealarm and use safe browser like opera(www.opera.com).

I'd like to try the free Antivirus by Avast mainly because I've read so many good reviews about it. I have Norton Internet Security installed currently in my PC. I've read that 2 antivirus programs are bound to conflict w/ each other. Should I uninstall completely my Norton or can I just temporarily disable it while I download the free Avast?

I have been a fan of Norton/Symantec since 1996. I followed blindly until 2004 when I finally had enough of the junk and headaches that followed. I used everything from the single stand alone version all the way up to the Enterprise Edition. Since 1999, not much has changed with their service. They added some bells and whistles, yet it does not keep up with what is happening. And they continue to charge more and more. I haven't figured that out yet.

Avast is a great product at a great price (FREE) for home use.

I found AVG useless in deleting viruses. Mcafee is ok. I recommend Norton Anti virus, in combination with YAHOO TOOL BAR that provides pop-up blocker and anti-spy scanner.

First of all I want to inform you of what i have learned on the internet on a forum about spyware and they told me on that forum that avg is not good at all that is is a form of spyware...just wanted to make you aware of that fact. I am not a kook I am 63 years old and worried all the time about my safety on this computer so i do alot of investigating... to tell yo the truth i think a-squared is great and it is free.... ewido security or ewido software which is also free is great and have found many bad things on my computer and removed them for me at no cost. both free. sypbot search and destroy is a winner free and sooo good for elimating bad things on your computer.... also for 52 dollars i have spent to get microsoft one care all of which includes a firewall a spyware program and also a virus thing and then i use the others also that i mentioned. also i use lavasoft personal just type lavasoft into your address bar and that is free and it does get rid of alot off things. get away from avg
I don't know about free but despite what people may say, do NOT go with Norton. Link is in my source as to why you shouldn't use them. You might have to google free virus protection but if you want the best, you might have to pay.
All Anti-Virus programs in the U.S. use the European Standardization. This makes them the same as far as the basic program is concerned. The difference in how effective the program is, is the definition updates for new virus's. Remember, a virus must start infecting before the companies can detect it and then evaluate it. Then they need to write an update and put it on your computer before it can protect you from them.

Avast produces a fantastic free home edition that is a complete suite for virus protection, e.g. Internet, PC, Mail, etc. It auto updates and provides a very effective shield against virtually any virus threat known today. In addition, it provides a lot of choices for scans, scheduling scan, etc. It's free...check out the link below for more information about the program and to download it for free :)

AVG is also a good product, but of the two, Avast is superior from my experience having used both...both in functionality and detection of threats. However, you need a good spyware/ malware detection program to compliment either Avast or AVG. If you do not already have one..then definitely check out Spybot Search and destroy--excellent program.
